Dallas Corey
Dallas Corey was born in Greenville, North Carolina on May 1, 1948. He moved to Hampton Roads at nine months old and grew up to be an active member of the community. As a child he attended Booker T. Washington and Huntington High School; both were segregated schools at the time. After graduating from Huntington High School in 1966, he began attending North Carolina Central University. Corey left North Carolina after a semester in order to take care of his family. Soon after, he joined the Marine Corps and fought in the Vietnam War until returning to the United States in 1968 with three Purple Hearts. Following his service in the Vietnam War, Corey began his job at a local telephone company. His careers include the Newport News Police Department, firefighting, and security. In addition, Corey was the first African-American at many of the positions he held. Currently, Corey is an active member of the Hampton Roads community and a grandfather to twenty-six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
